Our own chapter's name is "Alpha Omicron Beta." We are one of many chapters in the four-state "Minn-Wi-Kota" region of Phi Theta Kappa clubs, many of which are nearby here in the Twin Cities. Belonging to Phi Theta Kappa can open a number of doors--scholarships, entrance to schools you want to attend, better jobs, etc. In the past, the Inver Hills chapter has won regional and national-level awards. Our chapter has a number of active people who make a different at Inver Hills and in the community. We also have a number of other members who help as volunteers when their lives allow, and even more who are only occasionally active, if at all.
Why should you join?
There are many advantages: your membership is noted on your transcripts and diploma, you automatically qualify for hundreds of additional state, regional, and national scholarships of up to $10,000 and even more per year, you will receive many more brochures from colleges and universities interested in you, you have a chance to meet some great people on campus by volunteering and/or attending meetings, you can use your volunteer service and/or officer position as a valuable item on your resume and in your Personal Statement you often must write for colleges, graduate schools, and professional jobs, and your volunteer and officer experiences help you meet great people, discover and develop your talents, and give to your school and community.
If you're not a member, we'd love to have you join. We strongly encourage engaging in volunteer activities and attendance at meetings once you have joined; doing so adds significant elements to your resume, especially if you choose to lead a committee or become an officer, but even if you simply volunteer. (However, no activities are required.) Once you have joined, you may add your membership to your resume, and your transcript and diploma will have Phi Theta Kappa membership noted on them. Joining also qualifies you for hundreds of Phi Theta Kappa-only scholarships nationwide, and makes you more eligible for thousands of general scholarships. To join, you need to have completed at least 12 credits at Inver, earned an overall GPA of 3.25 at Inver, and earned a 3.5 GPA in at least one semester at Inver (in any semester, including summer). (You may also be eligible to expunge an old, poor GPA from a previous period of study at IHCC: see "Counseling," 2nd-fl. CC building.) Transfers from Phi Theta Kappa clubs at other two-year colleges are immediately acceptable as long as your GPA from your previous club meets the 3.25/3.5 GPA requirements of the Inver Hills club.
We usually have two orientations and one induction each semester. The two orientations are held in the morning and evening of the fall and spring "Student Success Day" around the 6th-7th week of the term. The inductions usually are held late afternoons over halfway through the semester. All dates will be advertised well in advance in the weekly chapter newsletter sent by email to all members.
