Hi everyone,

---Welcome to Phi Theta Kappa at Inver Hills College.  Our chapter is one of over1200 across the nation and several other countries, making Phi Theta Kappa the largest honor society in the world.

Our Inver Hills chapter--Alpha Omicron Beta--is among the five largest and most awarded among the 60 chapters in our four-state region of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North and South Dakota.  We generally have about two hundred members or more at any given time, all of whom are eligible upon transfer for additional Phi Theta Kappa scholarships, often automatically just because of their membership, at over 600 colleges and universities throughout the country.  In any given year, about twenty to thirty of our chapter members actively participate in meetings, volunteer opportunities, or leadership roles.  Our chapter has two orientation sessions, two inductions, and numerous volunteer opportunities every year.

We really like new members joining, and though membership does not require you to be active, we especially appreciate members who help and attend activities and events.  Members who compile 24 hrs. of volunteer activities through club events also win a special volunteer award that can be added to their resumes.

We have a weekly chapter email newsletter, "Phi Theta Kappa at Inver," and through that email list we also keep members knowledgeable about many other events for general students at Inver Hills each week.  If you would like to receive this weekly email newsletter, even if you are not a member, please contact richard.jewell@inverhills.edu.  Members who have been accepted also receive a weekly email newsletter from the international headquarters of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society.  We look forward to hearing from you!

Advisor's Corner:

WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT: I spent the summer tent camping, as usual. One of my most memorable single moments came in Whitewater State Park in SE Minnesota as I sat beside the Whitewater River, writing on my laptop, when a fawn came running down the trail and passed me within five feet. I also got to see deer drinking from the river several dozen feet downstream on two other occasions, not to mention visits by hummingbirds and woodpeckers and hungry "cheeps" from a nest of baby robins while I typed. This, to me, is at the heart of a highly important element of Phi Theta Kappa - scholarly pursuit.
I often find my best scholarly pursuit occurring in nature. That is where I develop some of my best ideas, where I best find and use quotations from scholarly sources, and where I most easily and creatively say what I am trying to say when I am writing scholarly papers and course materials. Why? I think the relaxation I feel in nature has something to do with it, as well as the beauty around me. Where do you work best as a scholar-thinker? It is important for each of us to know and take advantage of where and how our scholarly selves are happiest.
